What are the advantages and disadvantages of using a written survey rather than an interview?

Héctor Navedo Aponte, Ed. D.
For McMillan (2005, pp.293 ) surveys are versatile because they can be applied to investigate almost any problem or question. Many jobs have practical survey purposes and could be classified as evaluative research or action, although surveys are also used for basic applied research . He explains that surveys are common credible information that may be collected at a relatively low cost , especially written surveys sent by mail. Another advantage is that small samples can be selected from a large population, so as to allow generalizations to that population.

Note that without careful development of the questions, the sampling procedures and the overall design of the survey , it is unlikely that the methods of survey research to provide credible results . Therefore, it is necessary to use correct sampling procedures and carefully design the data collection techniques to ensure reliability and validity . The main advantage of using the survey interview is the anonymity that often motivates participants to participate and answer and be sure that they will not receive any warning. However, the big disadvantage is that you have to limit questions to established and new questions in an interview that could easily arise not arise .
